Previous Extemp Champions Teaching Upcoming Extemp Champions

One of Training Minds Camp's most successful programs is the one developed by 2006 NCFCA Extemp Title Winner Cody Herche, the majority of this CD package. One of Cody's students, Shane Baumgardner, went on to win the 2009 Extemp Championship, and is now a Gold Book coach also featured on this CD package. Shane coached the extemp champion in 2011, vindication that the Gold Camp program works.

Extemporaneous speakers are masters at current events. Coaches Herche, Baumgardner, Rehmke and Sparks give the fundamentals of how to master such a demanding activity. Join the attendees as if you were there in Colorado being trained by the champs. With the help of the accompanying Study Guide, learn the research strategies to help make you successful this upcoming competitive season.

Workshops

  • CD 1: Extemp: The Basics (Baumgardner)
Extemp is current events speaking, and the cornerstone of good extemping is analysis. Shane covers the basics, and adds some advanced strategies to give extempers a head start in competition.
  • CD 2: How to Write Your Speech (Baumgardner)
Extemporaneous speaking puts competitors in a pressure situation. They have 30 minutes to prepare a seven minute speech. Rather than wilt under the pressure, great extempers soar in this environment.
  • CD 3 & 4: Speaking for Impact (Sparks)
Sparks shares a fundamental communication philosophy in extemp, centering on how to help students capture and hold their audience's attention while differentiating themselves from the competition. Highlights include: Fluency is King, Differentiate or Die, and Thou Shalt Not Be Boring.
  • CD 5: Basic Economic Concepts for Extemporaneous Speaking (Rehmke)
A handful of basic economic concepts provides students a toolkit for analyzing economic topics. Students can apply these principles to government policies ranging from education to transportation, energy, environment, health care, securituies regulation, and many others.
  • CD 6: Filtering Bias (Herche, Sparks)
Bias isn't such a bad thing, but the key is to spot bias and use it to your advantage. Herche and Sparks speak much about prejudices and biases for extempers.
  • CD 7: The Extemp Lifestyle (Baumgardner)
At first glance, extemp is an overwhelming event. Applying some key habitsessentially developing a lifestylewill make you a champion extemper in no time.
  • CD 8: Ethical Extemping (Herche, Sparks)
Coaches Herche and Sparks take questions from extempers at camp concerning ethical temptations during the tournament. What if you forget a source? Is it ever okay to make up a source? The coaches weigh in with great tools for extemping.
